At Lilydale High School we recognise and value the partnership between parents and carers and the school, to best support students in the pursuit of their best. Throughout the year, along with daily feedback and interactions with teachers, students are provided regular formal feedback on their academic performance and their readiness to learn.
In order to best support students, we encourage parents and carers to engage with their students and the school regarding their progress to ensure each student has ownership and strategies to maximise their learning.
All students are assessed as to their Organisation, Effort and Behaviour in the classroom through our Progress Reports. These reports are made visible in approximately six week cycles throughout the school year on Compass, with notifications being sent to parents upon the completion of a cycle. A visual representation as to the level of Organisation, Effort and Behaviour achieved by your child across all three cycles this semester is also included in this report.
Students receive a score for each area of learning readiness, and an overall average which is referred to as a Grade Point Average.
Throughout the year students and families receive formal updates on academic progress through Learning Tasks and the end of semester Academic reports through Compass.
- Learning Tasks provide parents with continuous updates as to what students are learning in each of their subjects. Learning Tasks are assessed by teachers throughout the semester and made visible to parents on the Compass platform. At year 7-9, students are assessed using a Developmental rubric.
- Academic Reports are made available at the end of each semester as a summary of Learning Tasks, Victorian Curriculum Levels, attendance and Progress reports.
Throughout the year students and families receive formal updates on academic progress through School Assessed Course work (Learning Tasks) and the End of Semester Academic reports.
- School Assessed Course Work (in the Learning Tasks section) provides parents with updates as to what senior students are achieving in each of their subjects and made visible through the Compass platform. Students who are studying Unit 1-4 VCE or VCE VM courses are assessed in line with the requirements of their Study Design and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).
- Academic Reports are made available at the end of each semester as a summary of School Assessed Classwork, attendance, Satisfactory (S) or Not satisfactory (N) status of the Units and Progress reports.
Lilydale High School believes in the importance of homework in secondary school, in conjunction with the Department of Education we believe that:
Your child’s homework will become harder and more frequent in secondary school.
You can help your child create a homework timetable so they can keep track of their work. This should be a task you do together.
Use a diary or a calendar and:
- enter the dates and times of your child’s non-homework activities, like sport activities, house work, reading time
- get your child to list all their homework tasks for the week and when they are due
- ask your child to estimate how long each task will take to complete
- break up big tasks into small chunks
- colour-code each subject so that your child can see at a glance what they will work on
- allow 10–15 minute breaks for every hour of study
- allow breaks for mealtimes and encourage your child to eat with the rest of the family – this should be away from their desk or workspace.
To help support students in their transition to secondary school, we publish a cycle planner three times per semester that outlines the class focus and homework students need to complete each week in Years 7–9.
This is provided to the students via their Google Classroom, and sent to parents via email.
